Rushmore sits at the heart of the Cranborne Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty spanning Dorset and Wiltshire. This unique landscape is defined by ancient woodlands and breathtaking chalk downland valleys. Once a vast private deer hunting forest enjoyed by King John in the 12th century and subsequent monarchs, the Chase passed into private hands and was inherited by the Pitt family in the early 18th century. The Pitts remained Lords of the Chase until its disenfranchisement in 1829. While much of the surrounding landscape was later transformed—with deer lost and woods cleared—Rushmore itself, still in the care of the Pitt family, has retained the essence of its ancient and historic character.
